    Soak in Some Sunlight

As frustrating as the cold can be, the worst part of winter for many (myself included) is the lack of sunlight. Once the sun sets, the day is over, just like that — even with so many hours left. But it can be hard for our brains to register that fact, so instead we’re left with these truncated days. Even though they’re just as long as the days of summer, it sure doesn’t feel that way, which is why Daylight Savings Time is such a game changer for all of us, for better or for worse.

This weekend, we suddenly get an extra hour. Sunset has been creeping later into the evening since December, but the jump with Daylight Savings is quite the jolt for the brain. Just like that, the days are longer, and I find it always makes me more productive.

As the weather warms, and students head into March Break, take time to soak up the sun and enjoy the daylight. A day is always 24 hours, but our brains are easily tricked, so take advantage of being tricked into feeling the day suddenly became longer and make the most of it. That also means more time to check out the articles in our latest issue below! And be sure to also check out our video interviews with Canadian professionals.

  • Now is as good a time as any to get your 2024 goals underway!

Now is as good a time as any to get your 2024 goals underway!

It really felt like January just flew by, didn’t it? We blinked, and all of a sudden, we’re well into 2024. I hope your New Year has gotten off to a good start, and your resolutions and goals are coming along as well. And if not, now is as good a time as any to start!

Maybe you had all these grand ideas over the winter break about what your 2024 would look like, and that hasn’t panned out. It happens to all of us. The important thing is to not wallow. Accept that January is done and gone, and embrace all the time and opportunities you have in front of you. It only takes 20 hours to start learning a new skill, and anywhere from 10,000 to 25,000 to become an expert. Ignore those larger numbers for now and focus on that 25. With just an hour a day, you can become competent in something new before February is done. Long story short, it’s never too late to get going on those goals!

  • Take Time to Pause During the Hustle & Bustle!

Take Time to Pause During the Hustle & Bustle!

November can be a real hectic month. Along with September and October, this autumn period is sandwiched between the more casual vibe of August and the festive holidays of December. Amidst this hustle and bustle, make sure to take care of yourself and check in on your mental and physical health. It’s important to work hard, but also keep in mind that we all have our limits and it’s never worth going beyond them.

I don’t know about you, but this year has flown by. Yes, that’s something many of us say again and again, but it’s never felt more true in my case. Perhaps it’s part of getting older. Fortunately it doesn’t make me sad, but it does make me pause and reflect on how much has happened in 2023 and what’s to come in 2024. Before December gives us a chance to rest, take some time during this busy period to reflect in 2023 and what your goals are going forward.

Also take some time to check out our latest articles below. Make sure to watch our growing collection of interviews conducted by our student writers with professionals across various industries. They’re full of great insights, useful advice, and fun stories.

  • Happy Spooky Season!

    Happy Spooky Season!

The leaves are changing, the weather is cooling down (somewhat), and Halloween decorations in stores are clashing for prominence against Christmas decor. It all means we’re in the throes of late October. We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and have a great time next week for Halloween. If you’re heading out for trick-or-treating or for a Halloween party, have fun and stay safe!

Now that the school year is in full swing, JPD is back with more video interviews! You can check out the latest interviews here. They include discussions with Alex Sangha of Sher Vancouver, and Vinay Giridhar, director of Emergence: Out of the Shadows. We’ve also had the chance to speak with people behind Virtual Film School, which has a Canadian division through IBT College. On top of that, we also have more articles to check out below.

  • Happy Thanksgiving from JPD!

    Happy Thanksgiving from JPD!

We hope you’ve had a good start to your school year. September can be an exciting and stressful time, filled with new experiences and challenges, and it can take some time before we settle into the new swing of things.

With the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation having just passed, and Thanksgiving coming up this weekend, this is a good time to pause and reflect. We hope you were able to take part in Orange Shirt Day activities across the country, and have fun plans for this upcoming long weekend. Through it all, take a moment to think about your recent accomplishments, the challenges you’re currently up against, and the mix of both that lay on the road ahead.

  • Welcome back!

    Welcome back!

From festivals to heatwaves, we hope you had a great summer. But it’s time to trade in swimsuits and iced coffees for long sleeves and pumpkin spice lattes. September means enjoying those last sweltering hot days while also embracing all the fun and festivities that come with the final few months of the year. Of course, it also means back to school!

JPD welcomes all of you back to your studies, and that means we’re also back with more articles and videos to help you on your journey. Look forward to more helpful advice, reflections, and research from our intrepid student writers as they share insights on schooling, careers, and all the major issues and decisions you’re facing. Here’s to the new school year!

    Sincerely,

  • Best Wishes for the Rest of the School Year!

Best Wishes for the Rest of the School Year!

It can be difficult to accept how much luck plays into our lives. We’re all born into certain circumstances, with genes handed down from our parents, and things happen around us out of our control. Sometimes, bad things just happen.

But it’s also true that the harder you work, the luckier you get. I’m telling you that not just because I’ve heard it before, but also from experience. The more you learn, take care of your health, and gain new experiences, the more you open yourself up to lucky things happening. And you’ll be more ready to seize those opportunities as they arise.

That’s something to keep in mind as you get to the end of the school year and into the summer. Make the most not only of your last couple of months in class, but also the freedom of the summer months to explore new opportunities. And like always, check out the latest articles from our fantastic writers below.

We’ll be back later this month with more articles and video interviews. Then we’ll off for the summer and return with another issue in September. Best of luck to you for the rest of the school year and the exciting summer months ahead!

  • Hello from Across the Pond!

    Hello from Across the Pond!

Hello readers! I’m writing to you from across the pond in London. My partner and I ended up on an unexpected European adventure after some issues with open tickets we had with the airline. Long story short, we’re on an impromptu adventure. It’s been splendid, and a much-needed reminder for this risk-averse lad to take more leaps.

As spring gets underway, we’re back with more insights from our fantastic team of writers. While I work remotely, Meghan brings you great advice on traveling abroad to study. Back in Canada, Sarah takes a look at spring snowstorms and how they’re actually a sign of the climate change, not an argument against it. Too busy focused on your school year? Check out Tiffany’s advice on setting goals to make the most of the year. Looking ahead? Avreet’s got you covered with tips for your LinkedIn profile.

We have more articles featured below. Stay tuned mid-month for more interviews and articles. Until then, this train gets off at the next stop, so I better get going!
