The Competitive Nature of Scholarships: Some Tips on How to Deal

When you hear the word “scholarships”, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? Money? Reward? Work? How about competition? Some scholarships you don’t need to compete against others, but most of the time, you do. That can be an intimidating thought. There are many different types of scholarships out there. Some are related to sports, academia, the arts, and social activism. Applying for a scholarship in any case is a time to show your best self, proving that you are a worthy candidate for the goods in store. This means going above and beyond your usual work ethic.

If you are applying for sports scholarships, you may already have that natural competitive nature about you-this is a good thing. Scholarship applications can be time consuming and stressful. Scholarship interviews are even more taxing. You can think of it as being interviewed for a job, and there are tons of other people wanting that same job, too.

The bottom line when it comes to applying for scholarships is that you can only do the best you can, and also hope for the best result. Don’t give yourself more anxiety than you have to- this might even hinder your chances.

Basic tips and things to remember:

    • Make sure you give yourself LOTS of time to fill out the application form. This way, if you think of something more you want/need to add to the application, you have enough time to do it.
    • Make sure you have a few other people in your circle check out your application form, making sure everything is in the right place. One small mistake could cost you the scholarship.
    • Think out of the box. Some scholarships call for more creativity than others, so don’t be afraid to inquire about the scholarship and see if you can add something a bit extra on your application, or present in your interview.
    • Practice your interview skills. If you will be meeting with the people giving the scholarship, make sure you are chilled-out and ready to blow them away. People can sense anxiety when someone walks in the room, so take deep breaths, do meditation or “leader posing” before you enter the room. This will make you feel strong!
    • If you are applying for a big scholarship that looks over your whole high-school or college history, make sure you examine or write down all your achievements and see what else you can improve on, before you apply. Adding to your curricular repertoire will always help you in the end. So, beef it up!
    • Volunteer, volunteer, volunteer.
    • Don’t tell anyone you are applying to a specific scholarship. This may be a bit secretive or sneaky, but as soon as you tell your friends or other students, they might apply themselves and you will be in direct competition with them. It is really up to you, but this is where that competitive thinking must come into play.

Don’t let the competitive nature of scholarships scare you; let it fuel you! Bring out your fierce and dedicated nature and you might be surprised by the results. When you hear athletes speak about competing in the Olympics, you may notice that they never doubt themselves before their competition- they MUST win. Apply that attitude and you might just beat the competition and win your just reward.

  • How to Find Scholarships for Canadian Students

How to Find Scholarships for Canadian Students

Every year across Canada there are hundreds of thousands of dollars available to college and university students in the form of scholarships. However, even knowing there are so many options available, it can still be hard to find these scholarships, learn their requirements, and submit applications.

The term “scholarship” typically encompasses any money awarded to a student that will help them pay for their tuition and other school costs. Application procedures and requirements vary widely, but usually depend at least partly on your grades and other academic achievements. Scholarships are often divided into different categories, and awarded based on different criteria such as program of study, school of study, your grades, or your extracurricular activities. Depending on the application, you may need to provide written essays or letters, and a copy of your school transcript.

There are also scholarships that will automatically consider students without requiring an application; these are usually offered by colleges and universities, and will be offered to students meeting the requirements upon being accepted into the school. Most commonly, these entrance scholarships are offered to prospective students who apply with a certain grade average.

For international students planning to study in Canada, there are government-funded International Student Scholarships available, with various fulfillment requirements. These can be accessed at www.scholarships-bourses.gc.ca.

There are advantages to searching online through websites, as well as various internet search engines, such as helping you access scholarship opportunities from across the country. However, it is also a good idea to go the low-tech way and talk to people in person!

Speak to your school’s career and guidance counsellor, as they can direct you to local scholarship opportunities offered by your school itself, and by the community at large. Businesses, non-profit organizations, and professional organizations often offer student scholarships, especially for students pursuing studies in a field related to their own industry. Don’t forget to ask your parents and family members if their workplace offers any scholarships, as these are often available only to children of employees, and so may not be listed publicly elsewhere. Other places to inquire include local community organizations, cultural groups, churches, military veterans associations, banks, and skilled trade unions.

Once you have a list of scholarships you qualify for, start applying to as many as you can, as early as you can. This will increase your chances of getting some of these awards. Good luck!

  • Scholarships: It’s Not Just About Academics Anymore

Scholarships: It’s Not Just About Academics Anymore

Today’s tuition fees are higher than ever. Many students and parents alike scramble for ways to fund college and/or university education. While student loans are available throughout the country, the debt amount that students have to face after graduation is staggering. According to the Canadian Press, the current national average for student debt is $22,300.

For this reason, if you are an aspiring college and/or university student, it is worthwhile to look into other resources as well, in order to avoid facing such enormous debt upon your graduation. One of the most popular ways to do that is to acquire scholarships. While it is very rare that scholarships will fund your entire school degree, they serve as a big help. In some cases, with a scholarship, you will only have to borrow the minimum amount of college/university loan, avoiding large debt in return.

In days past, however, scholarships were mostly based on one’s academic performance. These days, there are a variety of ways to obtain a scholarship, and one doesn’t necessarily have to have straight As. This is definitely good news for those who excel in one particular subject but struggle with other subjects as everyone has their own learning abilities.

For instance, a student who excels in the Arts may not always be good in Math or Science, while a student who has a flair for words may not be as learned in Physics or Algebra. With this scholarship awarding system in place, everyone who needs financial help for their education has a number of chances to get what they need.

A look at other ways to earn scholarships:

    Essay Writing Contests

Are you a wordsmith? If you are, try your hand at essay writing contests with organizations like the Fraser Institute that offer scholarships as the top prize, or at least cash prize that you can use for your schooling.

     Arts

Those who excel in the Arts can look into scholarships and bursaries specifically for studying art-related courses and majors. For instance, the Arts Access Fund offers scholarships in visual art, drama, music, dance, and filmmaking.

    Company-Sponsored Scholarships

Ask your parents if their respective employers offer scholarships to employees with college- or university-bound kids. Some well-known companies like Canadian Tire, Coca-Cola Canada, and PepsiCo Beverages Canada do offer help for employees who are sending kids off to college or university.

    Non-Profit Organizations

There are tons of charities in Canada, and once in a while, some of them would offer deserving students a shot at winning a scholarship. Use your research skills and you will find some non-profit organizations which hold a fundraising event or campaign that will benefit students in need like you.

    Community Centers

Some community centers may have partnerships with other organizations or sometimes the educational institutions themselves and offer scholarships for students in need. It doesn’t hurt to ask your community centre about this.

Now that you know about these options, good luck in your search!

  • I Didn’t Get a Scholarship… Now What?

    I Didn’t Get a Scholarship… Now What?

Money should not, under any circumstances, serve as a barrier to education, yet the reality for many students can be quite different. Faced with consistently increasing tuition, student fees, and costs of living, many students find it difficult to imagine how they will be able to afford post-secondary. Scholarships are great ways to fund your education, but they certainly aren’t the only option.

If you applied for a scholarship but unfortunately did not receive one, don’t give up on your education yet. There are a variety of other options available that you may not have thought about. Finding money to go to school may be difficult, but do not let your apparent lack of funds stop you from pursuing your degree.

Here are some of the things you can do if you need help financing your education.

Speak to your parents/guardians. In fact, this is something you should do even if you have received a scholarship! Make your financial situation clear from the start, and see whether your family is able or willing to support you, and in what capacity. See what funds you have available before starting to panic.

Work. Start searching for opportunities to make the money yourself, including part-time jobs, summer employment, or work-study positions. You may not be able to earn the full cost of your tuition, but you can certainly make a dent in it. Keep in mind that most students, even those who receive financial assistance or compensation, take on a job anyway in order to cover excess costs.

Find out about grants and bursaries. Post-secondary institutions typically offer different types of financial assistance. Aside from scholarships, there are probably also grants and bursaries available for students who demonstrate financial need. To qualify for this option, you will likely have to complete a financial assessment according to your institution’s guidelines.

Take on a student loan. It might seem scary to spend money you don’t have, but loans are a reality not only for students, but for individuals later in life (cars, property mortgages, etc.). Student loans are typically offered alongside special benefits, such as reduced interest rates and increased flexibility when paying back the money. In Canada, each province handles student loans differently, so research your situation thoroughly before going to the bank.

If at first you don’t succeed… There should be plenty more opportunities for you to obtain a scholarship once you enter post-secondary. Do your research early, and see what options you have available in later years. If you work hard, there’s no reason why the scholarship board won’t reconsider you for sponsorship in the future.
