HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
Most chemists enter the field after completing a university degree in chemistry or a related science. In some roles, an advanced university degree may be preferred or required, especially for research or specialized work. Students in high school can prepare by taking chemistry, physics, math, and biology, and by building strong lab and communication skills. Co-op, summer jobs, or research assistant experience can also help students explore the field. Requirements can vary by employer and workplace, so it is a good idea to check the exact qualifications for each job.
THE WORK
What you may do
Chemists plan and carry out experiments to study the properties, composition, and reactions of matter. They prepare samples, use laboratory instruments, record results, and compare findings with known standards or expected outcomes. They may analyze materials used in manufacturing, food, fuel, water, or other products, depending on the job. Chemists also help improve products and processes, solve technical problems, and write reports so others can understand the results. Some chemists work in research, while others focus on testing, quality control, or applied science in government, industry, or education. Attention to detail and accurate documentation are important in this work.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
What a day can include
A chemist’s day may start by reviewing test plans, safety steps, and the work that needs to be finished. They might prepare samples, run lab tests, and watch how substances react under different conditions. During the day, they often compare results, check for errors, and repeat tests when needed to make sure the data is reliable. Some chemists spend time in meetings with engineers, technicians, or managers to explain findings or discuss next steps. Others may write reports, update records, or help solve a production or quality issue. The mix of work can change depending on whether the chemist is in a lab, a factory setting, a government office, or a research environment.
