HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
There is no single school path for this occupation, and requirements can vary by employer and region. Many workers have a college certificate or diploma, or other postsecondary training related to law enforcement, natural resources, or a similar field. Some also have a trades certificate or a bachelor’s degree. Employers may provide on-the-job training and short courses connected to law enforcement and resource management. A strong interest in outdoor work, wildlife, and conservation is helpful. Experience in rural or wilderness settings can also be an asset. In some places, a driver’s licence or other special permits may be required.
THE WORK
What you may do
Conservation officers, fish and game wardens enforce laws and regulations related to wildlife, fishing, hunting, and outdoor recreation. They patrol parks, waterways, and other natural areas to look for illegal activity and to help people follow the rules. They may inspect hunting gear, fishing gear, vehicles, catches, and licences. They also gather information, write reports, and may investigate complaints or suspected offences. In some situations, they work with other government departments, land managers, and community partners. The job can also include public education, answering questions from the public, and helping protect ecosystems, biodiversity, and sustainable use of natural resources.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
What a day can include
A typical day may start early with a patrol of a park, shoreline, river, or road leading to a hunting or fishing area. The officer may check licences, talk with the public, and look for signs of unsafe or illegal activity. During the day, they may follow up on complaints, inspect equipment or catches, and record observations. They often spend a lot of time outside, so the work can change with the weather and the season. Some days may include desk work, such as writing reports or preparing case notes. In the evening or on weekends, they may still need to respond if illegal activity is reported.
