HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
This job usually does not require university education. Many people enter with a high school diploma or even before finishing high school, although this can vary by employer and province. Some employers prefer applicants with related experience, safety awareness, or short training in construction basics. In some provinces, voluntary trade-related training or certification may help, and some employers may ask for safety training such as WHMIS. A driver’s licence or access to transportation can be useful because workers may need to travel between job sites. Students can prepare by taking shop, math, construction, and career and technical courses, then looking for entry-level work, summer jobs, or apprenticeships in the construction field.
THE WORK
What you may do
Construction workers in this occupation help with many basic tasks on construction sites. They may load, unload, and move materials; set up and take down tools, equipment, and temporary supports; and keep work areas clear and safe. They often dig, carry, lift, sweep, and clean up debris. They may help prepare concrete, handle forms, or assist tradespeople with simple hands-on work. On green building projects, they can also support tasks linked to energy-efficient construction, waste reduction, and careful material use. Workers need to follow instructions, watch for hazards, and work as part of a crew. The job is usually physically demanding and can change from one site to another.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
What a day can include
A typical day often starts early at a job site. The worker checks in with the crew, listens to instructions, and helps get tools and materials ready. During the day, they may carry supplies, clean work areas, move debris, support framing or concrete work, and help skilled tradespeople with basic tasks. The pace can be busy, especially during the spring and summer construction season. Work may take place outdoors in changing weather or indoors on a building site. Safety is important all day, so workers need to pay attention, use protective gear, and follow directions carefully. Some days involve one site, while others may require moving to a different location.
