HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
Many people enter this occupation with a high school diploma or equivalent, and some employers may accept applicants with less formal education if they show reliability and good local knowledge. Because entry requirements are generally low, on-the-job training is common and may cover delivery procedures, customer service, route planning, and safe handling of items. Some workers move into the job after related experience in delivery, warehousing, retail, or other transportation work. In some cases, people use it as a starting point and later move into other company roles such as clerical or logistics work. Requirements can vary by employer, location, and the type of delivery work involved.
THE WORK
What you may do
Couriers and messengers pick up, sort, carry, and deliver letters, parcels, documents, and other items within a local area. They follow delivery schedules, plan efficient routes, and may need to record pick-ups, drop-offs, and customer signatures. They often use phones, apps, or other digital tools to check instructions, update delivery status, and stay in contact with dispatch or customers. Depending on the job, they may deliver on foot, by bicycle, or using another mode allowed by the employer. They also handle items carefully, protect privacy, and make sure packages arrive at the right place and on time. Reliability, safe travel, and good customer service are important parts of the work.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
What a day can include
A courier’s day often starts with checking the list of deliveries, sorting items, and planning the best route. During the day, they travel between homes, offices, stores, and other locations to pick up and drop off parcels or documents. They may need to work in changing weather, follow a tight schedule, and keep track of stops using a phone or digital device. Some deliveries are routine, while others need extra care because they are time-sensitive or must be handled carefully. Couriers also answer customer questions, confirm delivery details, and update dispatch when needed. The work can be active and fast-paced, with a mix of time outdoors and short stops indoors.
