HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
A common pathway is a bachelor's degree in engineering, usually in electrical or electronics engineering or a closely related field. Some workers continue with additional university study. In Canada, engineering work can be regulated, and requirements vary by province or territory. Employers may hire new graduates who meet the academic requirements for registration, even if they are not fully registered yet. Experience from co-op, internships, labs, or project work can be helpful. Strong digital skills and familiarity with engineering software may also improve job chances, depending on the type of work.
THE WORK
What you may do
Electronics engineers plan, design, and test electronic circuits, components, and systems. They may develop equipment for communications, control systems, power systems, industrial machines, and other products. Their work often includes preparing technical plans, using software to model or design parts, checking performance, and solving problems when systems do not work as expected. They may also support research and development, help improve existing products, and work with technicians, technologists, and other engineers during building and testing. In some jobs, they review data, write reports, and recommend changes to improve safety, reliability, efficiency, or function. The exact tasks depend on the employer and industry.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
What a day can include
A day in this job can include meeting with a team to discuss a project, reviewing drawings or technical specifications, and checking whether a design meets its goals. You might spend time at a computer using design software, then move to a lab, workshop, or site to test equipment or inspect systems. Some days focus on troubleshooting a problem, comparing test results, or making changes to improve performance. Engineers also write notes or reports so others can understand the work. The pace can change depending on deadlines, project size, and whether you are working on new design, testing, or maintenance support.
