HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
Many people enter this trade through a mix of high school, on-the-job learning, and experience in construction or renovation work. Some workers also have an apprenticeship or trades certificate, while others learn the job by starting as helpers and building skills over time. Requirements can vary by employer and province. Useful school courses include shop, math, drafting, and building-related classes. Students interested in this path can look for summer or entry-level work in construction to gain basic experience with tools, measuring, and safety. Physical stamina, careful work, and a willingness to learn from experienced installers are important.
THE WORK
What you may do
Floor layers prepare floors before installation by checking the surface, cleaning it, and making sure it is ready for the material. They measure rooms and cut flooring products to fit around walls, corners, pipes, and fixtures. They install sheet materials, tiles, and other floor coverings using adhesives, tools, and equipment suited to the job. They also trim edges, roll or press the material into place, and make sure seams are aligned and secure. In some jobs, they remove old flooring first, repair small surface problems, and help protect nearby walls and finishes. Good accuracy matters because the finished floor must look clean and fit properly.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
What a day can include
A typical day may start with reviewing the job plan, checking materials, and setting up tools at a home, business, or construction site. The installer then measures the space, prepares the subfloor, and cuts flooring pieces to match the room. Much of the day is spent kneeling, lifting, carrying materials, and making careful adjustments so the floor fits well. The work may involve using hand tools, rollers, knives, straightedges, and adhesives. Some jobs are completed in teams, so communication matters. By the end of the day, the installer checks the finish, cleans the work area, and makes sure the flooring is secure and neat.
