HOW TO GET THERE

Typical pathway

Many people enter this occupation through a secondary-school diploma or equivalent, then complete an apprenticeship or college/trades program. In some provinces, hairstyling is a compulsory skilled trade and workers must be registered as, or complete, an apprenticeship to work in the occupation. Requirements can vary by province or employer. Some workers also build their skills through on-the-job experience, practice, and ongoing learning about new techniques and trends. Because styles, tools, and products keep changing, updating skills can help with job opportunities. Some hairdressers later work as self-employed stylists, rent a chair, or open their own business.

THE WORK

What you may do

Hairdressers wash, cut, trim, style, and colour hair for clients of different ages. They listen carefully to what clients want, offer suggestions, and help choose styles that suit face shape, hair type, and lifestyle. They may also shampoo hair, apply treatments, use scissors, clippers, combs, and other tools, and finish styles with brushes, dryers, and other products. Depending on the workplace, they may book appointments, clean work areas, maintain tools, and keep track of supplies. Some hairdressers also help with wigs, extensions, or special occasion styling. Good customer service is important because clients often return when they trust the stylist and like the result.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

What a day can include

A hairdresser’s day often starts with setting up the station, checking the appointment list, and making sure tools and products are ready. During the day, the hairdresser greets clients, talks about the look they want, and works through services such as washing, cutting, colouring, and styling. Between clients, they clean tools, sweep hair, restock supplies, and keep the workspace tidy. They may also answer calls, book future appointments, or help promote the business through social media. Some shifts are early, evenings, or weekends, especially when clients need to look their best for events. The job can be active, social, and fast-paced.
