HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
There is no single required pathway for this occupation, and requirements can vary by employer and region. Many people enter with a high school diploma or equivalent, while some may start with less formal education and learn on the job. Helpful preparation can include secondary-school courses, hands-on construction experience, and basic workplace safety training. Employers may prefer people who can work as part of a crew, travel to different sites, and handle physical tasks. In some places, extra training or experience in related construction work can improve job prospects. Students interested in this path can look for summer, part-time, or entry-level construction work to build experience.
THE WORK
What you may do
Helpers–Electricians assist electricians with preparing and organizing tools, materials, and equipment. They may carry supplies, pull wires or cable, and help with basic installation tasks under supervision. They often clean work areas, move materials, and keep job sites organized so the crew can work safely. Depending on the project, they may help set up ladders, access equipment, or support the installation of electrical systems in buildings. They also watch for hazards, follow safety rules, and help make sure materials are ready when needed. The work is physical and can involve lifting, bending, carrying, and moving around a site throughout the day.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
What a day can include
A typical day often starts by arriving at the job site, checking instructions, and gathering the tools and materials the electrician team needs. The helper may carry supplies to the work area, keep cables and parts organized, and support simple installation or cleanup tasks. During the day, they may move between different parts of the site, help prepare spaces for electrical work, and make sure the area stays clear and safe. They often work closely with skilled tradespeople and need to be ready to switch tasks as the project changes. At the end of the day, they may help put away tools, tidy the site, and load materials for the next shift.
