HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
There is no single pathway into this occupation, and requirements can vary by employer. Many people start with a high school diploma or while still in school, especially for summer or part-time work. Some employers may prefer candidates with basic construction experience, training in safe work practices, or related hands-on experience. In some provinces, employers may ask for specific safety certifications or experience, but this is not the same everywhere. A good way to prepare is to take shop, construction, or applied skills courses, build strength and endurance, and look for entry-level jobs or labourer roles on construction sites. Learning from experienced tradespeople is an important part of the job.
THE WORK
What you may do
Helpers in this occupation support skilled tradespeople on construction and renovation jobs. They may move materials, tools, and equipment to the work area, mix or carry supplies, and keep job sites organized and clean. They help prepare surfaces and work areas so the trade worker can complete painting, wallpapering, plastering, or stucco tasks. They may also set up ladders, scaffolding, or protective coverings, and help with basic finishing or cleanup work. The job can involve lifting, bending, crouching, kneeling, and working at different job sites. Workers often follow instructions closely, watch for hazards, and help keep the project moving safely and efficiently.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
What a day can include
A typical day starts early on a construction site or at a renovation project. The helper may unload materials, bring supplies to the right area, and help set up the work zone before the skilled worker begins. During the day, they might carry tools, mix materials, hold items in place, clean surfaces, or remove debris. They also help protect floors, windows, and nearby areas from dust or spills. Because the work changes from site to site, the tasks can shift quickly. The day often ends with cleanup, putting away equipment, and getting the site ready for the next stage of work. Teamwork and clear communication matter all day.
