HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
The pathway into this career usually includes post-secondary study in a relevant field such as counselling or a related discipline. In Canada, some employers or regions may expect a bachelor’s degree, while many roles require graduate-level study or additional training. Requirements can vary by province, territory, and employer. Practical experience, supervised client work, and strong communication skills are often important. In some places, registration with a professional body may be required or encouraged. Because many therapists work in private practice or in community and health settings, students may also benefit from learning about ethics, confidentiality, and the use of virtual care technology.
THE WORK
What you may do
Marriage and family therapists meet with clients to listen to concerns, ask thoughtful questions, and help people understand patterns in their relationships and behaviour. They may work with couples, parents and children, or individuals facing family conflict, grief, anxiety, separation, or communication problems. A large part of the job is creating a safe, respectful space where people can speak honestly. Therapists help clients set goals, practice new ways of coping, and work toward stronger relationships. They also keep notes, follow ethical guidelines, and may collaborate with other health or social service professionals when needed.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
What a day can include
A typical day may include meeting several clients in person or online, each with different concerns and goals. One session might focus on helping partners communicate more clearly, while another may support a family dealing with conflict or a major life change. Between sessions, the therapist may review notes, prepare for appointments, update case records, and coordinate with other professionals when appropriate. The work also involves careful listening, emotional focus, and staying present with each client. Some days are steady and structured, while others may involve unexpected situations that require patience, calm judgment, and flexibility.
