HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
Most people enter this occupation with a high school diploma or equivalent, although requirements can vary by employer and workplace. Some workers have apprenticeship or trades training, while others learn on the job. Useful preparation includes taking math, shop, technology, and communications courses in secondary school. After hiring, new workers usually learn machine setup, safety rules, quality checks, and the specific equipment used in that print shop or manufacturing plant. Experience with mechanical equipment, attention to detail, and steady hands can be helpful. In some workplaces, advancement may come from gaining experience with more complex presses or a wider range of production tasks.
THE WORK
What you may do
Printing press machine operators and tenders prepare presses for production by loading materials, adjusting controls, and checking that the machine is ready to print. During a run, they monitor speed, colour, alignment, and print quality, making adjustments when needed. They may change ink, paper, plates, or other supplies, and they watch for jams, wear, or other problems that could affect the job. Operators also inspect finished pieces, record production information, and help keep equipment clean and in good working order. Depending on the workplace, they may work with different types of presses and printed products, from packaging to publications and other commercial materials.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
What a day can include
A typical day often begins with checking the production schedule and getting the press ready for the next job. The operator may load paper or other materials, set machine controls, and run test sheets to make sure the print is accurate. Once production starts, the worker watches the press closely, checking colour, registration, and overall print quality. Small adjustments may be needed throughout the shift to keep the job on target. The operator also listens for unusual sounds, clears minor issues, and makes sure supplies are ready. Near the end of the job, finished pieces are inspected and the press is cleaned or prepared for the next order.
