Real Estate Sales Agents

Real estate sales agents help people buy, sell, or lease homes and other properties. HOW TO GET THERE

Typical pathway

A common pathway starts with completing secondary school, then learning the job through employer training and industry-specific education or courses, depending on the province or territory. Some people also complete college or university studies in business, marketing, or a related field, but this is not the same everywhere and is not always required. Real estate agents usually need to meet local industry rules before working independently, and these requirements vary by province or territory. New workers often begin by helping an experienced agent, building knowledge of the local market, and developing customer service and sales skills. Networking, persistence, and practical experience matter a lot in this occupation.

THE WORK

What you may do

Real estate sales agents meet with buyers, sellers, and sometimes tenants to understand what they need. They prepare property listings, show homes and other properties, and answer questions about features, prices, and neighbourhoods. They help sellers set a realistic asking price by reviewing market information and recent sales. They promote properties through ads, online postings, open houses, and their business network. They also arrange viewings, coordinate with other real estate professionals, and help negotiate offers and conditions. In many cases, they keep records, follow up with clients, and support paperwork connected to transactions. Good communication, organization, and trust-building are central to the role.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

What a day can include

A real estate sales agent’s day may start with checking messages, reviewing new listings, and planning appointments. They might meet clients to discuss goals, take buyers to view properties, or visit a home that is being prepared for sale. During the day, they compare market data, update listing information, write property descriptions, and stay in touch with lenders, lawyers, home inspectors, or other professionals involved in a sale. Some time is often spent driving between appointments, returning calls, and answering emails. Because clients are busy, evenings and weekends can be part of the schedule. No two days are exactly alike, and the work can be fast-paced when deals are active.
