HOW TO GET THERE

Typical pathway

Most registered nurses complete a nursing program at college or university and then meet the requirements to practise in their province or territory. The exact pathway can vary by location. Some employers prefer applicants with a bachelor’s degree, and some settings value additional study or related experience. After education, graduates usually need to register with the provincial or territorial nursing regulator before working as a registered nurse. In some provinces or jobs, employers may also look for specific workplace training or experience in areas such as hospitals, community health, or long-term care. Students can prepare by taking science and math courses, building strong communication skills, and volunteering or exploring health-care settings.

THE WORK

What you may do

Registered nurses assess patients, record health information, and help plan and deliver care. They may give medications, monitor symptoms, change dressings, and support recovery after surgery or illness. They also teach patients and families about health conditions, treatments, and self-care. In many workplaces, nurses work with doctors, nurse practitioners, and other health professionals to coordinate care. They may respond to urgent changes, support mental health, and help people manage chronic conditions. Depending on the setting, they may work with newborns, children, adults, older adults, or people needing psychiatric care. Good observation, communication, and safe practice are a big part of the job.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

What a day can include

A registered nurse’s day can change quickly. One shift may begin with reviewing patient charts, checking vital signs, and learning about the day’s priorities from the previous team. During the day, the nurse may give medications, help with comfort and personal care, update records, and watch for changes in a patient’s condition. Nurses often answer questions from patients and families, explain care plans, and work closely with other health professionals. In a busy hospital, the pace can be fast and unpredictable. In community or long-term care settings, the work may involve more regular visits, teaching, and follow-up. The job requires focus, calm under pressure, and good teamwork.
