HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
There is no single pathway into this occupation, and requirements can vary by employer and region. Many workers start with a high school diploma or equivalent, while some have trades training or related job experience. Employers often value people who are comfortable with physical work, machinery, and working in remote or industrial settings. New workers may begin in entry-level roles on drilling crews and learn through on-the-job training. Useful school subjects include math, science, and shop or technology classes. Students interested in this path can also look for part-time work, summer jobs, or volunteer experiences that build teamwork, reliability, and practical skills.
THE WORK
What you may do
Rotary drill operators help move, set up, and operate rotary drilling equipment used to drill oil and gas wells. They handle drill pipes, tools, and other equipment, and may assist with mixing drilling fluids and keeping supplies ready. They watch equipment during drilling, look for problems, and help make small adjustments under supervision. Workers also help maintain the site, clean equipment, and keep the work area organized. Safety rules are important because the job involves heavy machinery, moving parts, and changing weather or site conditions. Operators work as part of a crew and must communicate clearly, follow instructions, and stay alert throughout the shift.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
What a day can include
A typical day can start early and may involve travel to a drilling site or a shift change at camp. The crew checks equipment, reviews safety procedures, and prepares the rig for work. During the day, the operator may help handle pipes and tools, support drilling tasks, and watch for changes in equipment or site conditions. Breaks may be short, and the pace can change quickly when the drill reaches a new stage or when weather affects the work. The job often requires standing for long periods, lifting, and working around noise, mud, and heavy equipment. Clear communication and teamwork are part of almost every task.
