HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
Many people start in this occupation with a high school education or while still completing school. Employers often value reliability, a good attitude, and willingness to learn on the job. Some students begin with part-time or seasonal work and build experience in customer service, cash handling, and basic station procedures. Depending on the employer, training may be provided at work. The exact pathway can vary by workplace, but this job is usually accessible to people who are comfortable dealing with the public, following instructions, and working in a retail environment. Over time, some workers use this experience to move into other customer service jobs.
THE WORK
What you may do
Service station attendants greet customers and provide friendly, efficient service. They may fuel vehicles, clean windshields, check tire pressure, and offer other basic vehicle-related help when asked. In some workplaces, they also take payments, process cash or card transactions, and operate the cash register. They may keep the station area tidy, restock supplies, and help maintain a safe and orderly worksite. Attendants can also answer questions about products, services, or station procedures. The exact duties depend on the employer and the type of service station, but the work generally focuses on customer service, routine tasks, and keeping the station ready for use.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
What a day can include
A typical shift may start with opening tasks such as checking the work area, restocking supplies, and making sure equipment is ready. During the day, the attendant helps customers with fueling, payment, and simple service requests. There may be busy periods, especially when traffic is steady. Between customers, the worker may clean the station area, organize products, and keep the service island safe and orderly. The job often requires standing for long periods, moving between indoor and outdoor tasks, and staying alert to customer needs. At closing, the attendant may complete cleanup, count cash if needed, and prepare the station for the next shift.
