HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
A common pathway is to finish high school and then enter a trade-related training route. Many workers learn through an apprenticeship or a trades program, while others may start in an entry-level helper role and build skills on the job. The exact route can vary by province, employer, and the type of work being done. In Ontario, this occupation is linked to compulsory skilled trades requirements. Students interested in this career can prepare by taking math, shop, and drafting or construction-related courses, and by looking for co-op, summer, or pre-apprenticeship experiences if available.
THE WORK
What you may do
Sheet metal duct installers measure, cut, shape, and assemble sheet metal parts to make ducts and related pieces for air systems. They read plans or follow instructions to fit ductwork into homes, offices, and larger buildings. The work can include fastening sections together, sealing joints, and making sure parts line up correctly. They may also install hangers, supports, and fittings, and help with adjustments during installation. Some jobs involve working on new construction, while others are on renovations or repairs. Careful measuring, safe tool use, and teamwork are important because the work must fit the building and connect properly with heating and ventilation equipment.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
What a day can include
A typical day may start by reviewing plans, checking the work area, and gathering the right tools and materials. The installer then measures and cuts metal, bends or shapes pieces, and fits them together to match the layout of the building. Much of the day can be spent on ladders, scaffolds, or in tight spaces as ductwork is placed and secured. The work often involves carrying materials, checking alignment, sealing joints, and solving small fit problems as they come up. The job is hands-on and physical, and workers need to stay alert to safety rules, changing site conditions, and deadlines. Team communication matters because ductwork has to fit with other construction work.
