HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
There is no single pathway to becoming a singer in Canada. Many people start by singing in school, community groups, church choirs, bands, or local performances, and then keep building experience. Taking voice lessons, music classes, or training in performance can help, but the route varies by person. Some singers study music or theatre after secondary school, while others learn mainly through practice, coaching, and live work. Building a portfolio of recordings, performances, and auditions is often important. Because opportunities are often based on talent and entrepreneurship, networking, self-promotion, and persistence matter a great deal.
THE WORK
What you may do
Singers prepare and perform songs for concerts, studio recordings, tours, theatre shows, events, and other performances. They learn lyrics, melodies, rhythm, and style, then practise to improve timing, breath control, tone, and expression. Many singers rehearse with musicians, directors, sound crews, or other performers to match the needs of a production. They may record demo tracks, audition for roles, and adapt their voice to different genres or audiences. Some singers also write or arrange material, build a personal brand, and look for performance work through networking or self-promotion. Work can include travel, repeated rehearsals, and ongoing vocal care.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
What a day can include
A singer’s day often starts with vocal warm-ups, breathing exercises, and reviewing the songs planned for rehearsal or performance. They may spend time learning new lyrics, refining harmonies, or practising difficult sections until the timing and tone feel strong. If a show is coming up, part of the day may include rehearsal with a band, accompanist, director, or sound technician. Singers may also answer messages, apply for gigs, prepare audition material, update recordings, or plan travel between venues. On performance days, they check microphones, costumes, set lists, and show timing, then focus on staying calm, rested, and ready to perform.
