HOW TO GET THERE

Typical pathway

There is no single pathway into this job, and requirements can vary by school board or employer. Many people complete a college program or other post-secondary training related to educational assistance, child and youth care, early childhood education, or a similar field. Some employers may prefer people with experience working with children or youth, especially in school settings. For roles supporting students with special needs, additional training in areas such as communication supports, assistive devices, or special education techniques can be helpful. In some places, extra safety checks or first aid training may be expected. Students can start preparing by taking courses that build communication, teamwork, and child development knowledge.

THE WORK

What you may do

Teacher assistants support teachers by working with students during lessons, group activities, and independent work. They may help explain instructions, prepare materials, supervise students, and give extra help to those who need it. In some schools, they support students with learning, behaviour, communication, or personal care needs. They may use tools such as assistive technology, sign language, Braille, or communication supports when trained to do so. Teacher assistants also help keep the classroom organized and safe, watch students during transitions or activities, and share observations with teachers. Their role is to encourage participation, build confidence, and help students stay engaged in learning.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

What a day can include

A teacher assistant’s day often follows the school schedule. In the morning, they may meet with the teacher to review the day’s plan, prepare learning materials, and set up the classroom. During class, they move between students to offer help, read instructions, repeat directions, or keep students on task. They may work with a small group on reading, math, or another subject, or spend time supporting one student who needs extra attention. They also help during lunch, recess, arrival, dismissal, or class transitions. Later in the day, they may tidy materials, note student progress, and talk with the teacher about what support worked well.
