HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
Requirements can vary by employer and type of hauling. In many places, a high school diploma is common, but some workers enter with different education backgrounds. On-the-job training is typical, and employers may value a clean driving record, good judgment, and the ability to handle long hours. A commercial truck driver’s licence is required for driving these vehicles, and some jobs need extra certifications or training depending on the cargo, such as dangerous goods. In some provinces, formal entry-level training or other local requirements may apply. Students interested in this career can start by building safe driving habits, learning basic vehicle checks, and gaining comfort with maps, technology, and time management.
THE WORK
What you may do
Tractor-trailer truck drivers pick up, transport, and deliver cargo using large commercial trucks. They plan or follow routes, check loads, and make sure goods are secured before leaving. They inspect the vehicle before and after trips, looking for safety issues, mechanical problems, or damage. Drivers keep records, follow transport rules, and may communicate with dispatchers, customers, or warehouse staff. Some jobs involve local deliveries and regular home time, while others are long-haul and can mean nights away. Drivers also handle traffic, weather, and road conditions carefully. In some cases, they may transport special cargo that needs extra rules and attention.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
What a day can include
A driver’s day often starts early with a vehicle walk-around and safety inspection. They review the route, confirm the shipment, and make sure the truck is ready for the road. During the day, they may drive long stretches, stop to fuel up, load or unload cargo, and keep in touch with dispatch about timing or delivery changes. They also need to watch road conditions, manage fatigue, and stay alert for construction zones, traffic, and weather. At the end of a trip, they complete records, check for any issues, and prepare for the next run. Long-haul drivers may spend several days away from home, while local drivers may return the same day.
