HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
There is no single school path for this occupation, and requirements can vary by employer and vehicle type. Many workers have a high school diploma or equivalent, while others enter with less formal schooling. Most training is provided on the job, especially for local routes, delivery procedures, customer service, and workplace safety. A driver’s licence appropriate to the class of vehicle being driven is required. Some employers may value experience with freight handling, route planning, or digital delivery systems. In some cases, additional training or certifications may help a person compete for jobs, but these are not universal requirements.
THE WORK
What you may do
Truck drivers in light or delivery services load and unload goods, plan routes, and make deliveries on time. They may pick up items from stores, warehouses, or distribution centres and bring them to homes, businesses, or other locations. They check orders, handle delivery paperwork or digital records, and may collect payment or confirm delivery with customers. Some drivers work with couriers, retail businesses, wholesalers, food services, or postal and messengering services. The job can involve repeated lifting, careful handling of packages, and following safety rules and driving regulations. Drivers also need to watch vehicle condition, keep schedules, and deal politely with customers during deliveries.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
What a day can include
A typical day may start early with checking the vehicle, reviewing the delivery list, and loading packages in route order. After that, the driver spends much of the day on the road, making stops, carrying parcels, and updating records or using delivery apps. Some stops are quick, while others involve waiting, confirming details, or collecting payment. Drivers often need to adjust to traffic, weather, and last-minute changes to routes. During the day, they may speak with customers, warehouse staff, or dispatchers. At the end of the shift, they return any undelivered items, report issues, and prepare for the next day.
