HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
There is no single path into web development. Many people build their skills through college or university programs in computer-related fields, while others learn through other training and hands-on experience. The education level of workers in this occupation varies by region and employer, but post-secondary study is common. Students who want this career should focus on learning programming languages, web design basics, and user experience principles. It also helps to keep learning new tools and technologies, because the field changes quickly. Internships, personal projects, co-op placements, and freelance work can help build a portfolio and show what you can do. Some jobs may ask for more front-end knowledge, while others value full-stack skills or project experience.
THE WORK
What you may do
Web developers plan, build, test, and update websites and web applications. They may create page layouts, add features, fix bugs, and make sure sites work on different devices and browsers. They often write and adjust code, using languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and sometimes other languages depending on the job. Some work on the front end, which is what users see, while others also help with back-end systems that support the site behind the scenes. They may improve site speed, support security, and make changes based on client or team feedback. In some workplaces, they also work with content teams, designers, and project managers.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
What a day can include
A web developer’s day often starts by checking messages, project tasks, and any urgent website issues. They may attend a team meeting, then spend time writing code, testing a new feature, or fixing a problem reported by users or coworkers. Later, they might review how a page looks on different screen sizes, update content, or improve how a website performs. Some of the day can involve meeting with designers, clients, or project managers to understand goals and make changes. Developers also test their work carefully so it functions properly and is easy to use. If they work remotely or as freelancers, they may balance several projects at once and communicate online with clients and teammates.
