HOW TO GET THERE

Typical pathway

A typical pathway into painting may begin with high school courses that build basic math, communication, and practical skills. Some people learn through on-the-job training, while others enter a trade-related apprenticeship or training program. New workers often start with simpler tasks and learn how to prepare surfaces, use tools safely, and apply finishes properly. Experience can help a painter work on a wider range of projects and surfaces over time.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

What a day can include

A painter’s day may start with setting up tools, materials, and protective coverings. Much of the work can involve surface preparation, such as cleaning, sanding, or filling small imperfections, before applying paint or coatings. During the day, painters may move between different locations, work at heights or in tight spaces, and check that the finish looks even and consistent. At the end of the job, they usually clean tools and the work area.
