HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
A typical pathway often begins with strong high school courses in science, math, and English. Students usually complete a recognized postsecondary program in medical laboratory technology and may need supervised clinical practice as part of that training. After graduation, technologists commonly seek certification or registration required in their province or territory. Ongoing learning is often important because lab methods, equipment, and healthcare standards can change over time.
THE WORK
What you may do
- Prepare and process laboratory samples
- Run tests using lab instruments and procedures
- Check results for accuracy and quality
- Record and report findings
- Follow safety and infection-control practices
- Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment
- Work with other healthcare professionals
A DAY IN THE LIFE
What a day can include
A medical laboratory technologist’s day may include receiving samples, confirming test requests, and preparing materials for analysis. Much of the work is careful and methodical, with attention to detail, accuracy, and safety. Technologists often use specialized instruments, monitor quality controls, and document results in lab systems. They may also communicate with other healthcare workers to help ensure tests are completed correctly and on time.
