HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
A photographer’s pathway may begin with high school courses or activities in media arts, photography, design, or communications. Many people build skills through practice, a portfolio, short courses, workshops, or post-secondary programs, though the route can vary. Some photographers start by assisting others, freelancing, or gaining experience with digital cameras and editing software. Strong visual judgment and the ability to work with different subjects often matter as much as formal study.

A DAY IN THE LIFE
What a day can include
A photographer’s day may include preparing gear, scouting a location, and adjusting lighting before a shoot. They often spend time directing subjects, capturing multiple shots, and checking image quality on the spot. After the shoot, they may select, edit, and organize photos, communicate with clients or editors, and manage files and deadlines. Some days are spent mostly indoors at a studio or computer, while others involve travel and moving between locations.
