People entering technical sales consultant work often combine sales experience with knowledge of the products or services they represent. Some start in customer service, retail, or another sales role and build technical knowledge on the job. Training may also come from company programs, product demonstrations, and mentoring. Strong communication and the ability to learn technical details are usually important.
