HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
People entering research often build a strong background in a science, technology, or related subject. A post-secondary education is commonly involved, and many research roles may prefer advanced study depending on the field and employer. Students can prepare by taking courses that strengthen math, writing, data analysis, and problem-solving skills. Experience through projects, labs, co-op, or assisting in research can also be helpful for learning methods and developing practical habits.
THE WORK
What you may do
- Identify research questions or problems
- Collect and review information or data
- Design and carry out investigations
- Analyze results and look for patterns
- Write reports, summaries, or presentations
- Share findings with colleagues or clients
A DAY IN THE LIFE
What a day can include
A researcher’s day may include reading background materials, planning the next step in a project, and collecting or organizing data. They often spend time in a lab, office, or field setting, depending on the topic. Much of the work involves careful observation, analysis, and discussion with others. Researchers may also write notes, prepare results, and make adjustments when evidence suggests a different approach.
