HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
A psychiatrist is a physician, so the pathway typically includes strong secondary-school preparation in science and other academic subjects, followed by post-secondary study in medicine. After medical school, a person usually completes specialty training in psychiatry and the licensing steps required to practise as a doctor in Canada. Some psychiatrists may later choose to focus on particular age groups or types of care. Because this career is in healthcare, students often benefit from developing empathy, clear communication, and an interest in both science and people.
