HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
People entering fashion design often build skills through high school art, textiles, sewing, and visual communication. Some may continue into a college or university program in fashion design or a related field, while others develop experience through portfolios, internships, or entry-level work in the fashion industry. A strong portfolio is often important because it can show creativity, technical ability, and personal style. Over time, designers may specialize in clothing, accessories, costume, or other areas of fashion.

A DAY IN THE LIFE
What a day can include
A fashion designer’s day may include researching trends, meeting with clients or team members, and developing design ideas. They often sketch concepts, choose fabrics, and adjust details to make sure the design looks and works as intended. The work can involve both creative thinking and practical tasks, such as reviewing samples, comparing materials, and preparing designs for production. Some days may be spent in a studio, while others involve visiting suppliers or collaborating with others.
