CAREER PROFILE

Mechanical Engineer

Mechanical engineers design, build, and improve the machines, tools, systems, and equipment that keep industries running. Their work can involve solving problems, planning projects, testing ideas, and checking how parts move, vibrate, or wear over time. They also help install and maintain mechanical systems and investigate failures when something goes wrong. If you enjoy math, physics, chemistry, and practical problem-solving, this career could be a strong fit.

HOW TO GET THERE

Typical pathway

The usual pathway is a university engineering degree, but requirements can vary by employer and province. In some places, this occupation is regulated, and employers may expect or require professional engineering registration for certain roles. Graduates of mechanical engineering or related programs may be hired while they work toward accreditation or licensing where applicable. Students often prepare by taking strong math, physics, and technology courses in high school, then continuing into engineering studies. Practical experience through co-op, internships, projects, or student design teams can also help build skills. Digital literacy and familiarity with design software can be an advantage.

THE WORK

What you may do

Legacy duties

  • Conduct research into the feasibility, design, operation and performance of mechanisms, components and systems
  • Plan and manage projects, and prepare material, cost and timing estimates, reports and design specifications for machinery and systems
  • Design power plants, machines, components, tools, fixtures and equipment
  • Analyze dynamics and vibrations of mechanical systems and structures
  • Supervise and inspect the installation, modification and commissioning of mechanical systems at construction sites or in industrial facilities
  • Develop maintenance standards, schedules and programs and provide guidance to industrial maintenance crews
  • Investigate mechanical failures or unexpected maintenance problems
  • Prepare contract documents and evaluate tenders for industrial construction or maintenance
  • Supervise technicians, technologists and other engineers and review and approve designs, calculations and cost estimates.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

What a day can include

A mechanical engineer’s day often mixes office work with time in workshops, plants, or construction sites. In the morning, they may review design drawings, check calculations, respond to technical questions, or meet with a project team. Later, they might update reports, compare equipment options, estimate costs, or help solve a problem with a machine or system that is not working as expected. If a project is at the installation stage, they may visit a site to inspect progress, answer questions from technicians or contractors, and check that work matches the design. The day can also include calls, presentations, and planning for upcoming deadlines.
