CAREER PROFILE

Computer and Telecommunications Hardware Engineers

Computer and telecommunications hardware engineers design and improve the physical parts that make computers and communication systems work. They create things like circuit boards, microprocessors, and other hardware, then test prototypes to make sure they perform correctly. In this career, you may also help oversee manufacturing, solve design problems, and work with suppliers, clients, and engineering teams. If you enjoy math, computer science, and hands-on problem-solving, this field could be a strong fit.

HOW TO GET THERE

Typical pathway

A typical pathway starts with Grade 12 courses in math, physics, computer science, and design or technology, with strong marks helping for postsecondary admission. Many students then complete a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a closely related field. During school, co-op, internships, or summer work can build hands-on experience with hardware design, testing, and team projects. Some roles may value extra experience in manufacturing support, prototype testing, or working with engineers and technologists. Requirements can vary by employer, province, and specialization.

THE WORK

What you may do

Legacy duties

  • Analyze user's requirements, and design and develop system architecture and specifications
  • Research, design, develop and integrate computer and telecommunications hardware such as microprocessors, integrated circuit boards and semiconductor lasers
  • Develop and conduct design verification simulations and prototype bench tests of components
  • Supervise, inspect and provide design support during the manufacturing, installation and implementation of computer and telecommunications hardware
  • Establish and maintain relationships with suppliers and clients
  • May lead and co-ordinate teams of engineers, technologists, technicians and drafters in the design and development of computer and telecommunications hardware.
