HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
There is no single pathway into this occupation, and requirements can vary by employer and workplace. A college diploma is often used for entry, and some jobs may prefer a related degree. Helpful study areas include biology, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture, or environmental science. Lab or research experience can improve job prospects. Secondary-school students who are interested in this field should focus on science courses, especially biology and chemistry, and build strong computer and technical writing skills. Experience from co-op, lab clubs, field activities, or summer work can also be useful. Some employers may look for additional specialized knowledge depending on the sector, such as agriculture, health sciences, or environmental work.
THE WORK

A DAY IN THE LIFE
What a day can include
A typical day may begin in a lab setting, where the technician checks equipment, reviews sample lists, and gets ready for testing. The day can include running analyses, recording results, and carefully handling biological materials. Some days are spent outside collecting samples or helping with surveys in fields, wetlands, or other sites. Back at the lab or office, the technician may sort samples, enter data into computer systems, and help summarize findings for a report. There is often close teamwork with technologists, scientists, and other staff. Because the work depends on accurate methods and careful note taking, attention to detail matters throughout the day. Tasks can change depending on the project, the season, and the employer.
