HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
A common pathway is to finish secondary school with math, physics, drafting, and computer courses, then take a college or technical diploma in civil engineering technology or a related program. Some students also build skills through co-op, summer jobs, or entry-level work with engineering, surveying, testing, or construction firms. Employers may ask for different combinations of education and experience depending on the province, project, or specialty. Early experience usually focuses on drawings, site checks, measurements, material testing, and reports while working with engineers and construction teams.
