HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
A typical path is to finish secondary school with strong math, physics, drafting, computer, and technical courses. Many students then take a college diploma or similar postsecondary program in civil engineering technology or a related field, though some employers may consider other relevant education and experience. Early experience can come from co-op, summer jobs, or entry-level technician work with engineering, construction, survey, or public works teams. New workers often learn on the job by helping prepare drawings, collect field data, and support surveys, inspections, and technical checks. Requirements can vary by employer, province, and the type of work.
