CAREER PROFILE

Mechanical Engineering Technologists

Mechanical engineering technologists help turn ideas into working machines, systems, and products. In this career, you might read and prepare CAD drawings, help design parts and equipment, estimate materials and costs, test how things perform, and inspect mechanical installations. You’ll use math, physics, drafting, blueprint reading, and computer skills, and often work with engineers and construction or manufacturing teams. If you like solving practical problems and seeing plans become reality, this field may be a great fit.

HOW TO GET THERE

Typical pathway

A common route is to finish secondary school with strong math, physics, drafting, and computer skills, then take a college diploma or similar postsecondary program in mechanical engineering technology or a related field. Students often learn CAD, blueprint reading, materials, testing, and basic design methods, with labs or co-op-style work where available. Some people also build skills through related experience in manufacturing, construction, maintenance, or drafting. Requirements can vary by employer, province, and specific job duties, so some roles may want more training or experience than others.

THE WORK

What you may do

Legacy duties

  • Prepare and interpret conventional and computer-assisted design (CAD) engineering designs, drawings, and specifications for machines and components, power transmission systems, process piping, heating, ventilating and air-conditioning systems
  • Prepare cost and material estimates, project schedules and reports
  • Conduct tests and analyses of machines, components and materials to determine their performance, strength, response to stress and other characteristics
  • Design moulds, tools, dies, jigs and fixtures for use in manufacturing processes
  • Inspect mechanical installations and construction
  • Prepare contract and tender documents
  • Supervise, monitor and inspect mechanical installations and construction projects
  • Prepare standards and schedules and supervise mechanical maintenance programs or operations of mechanical plants.
