HOW TO GET THERE

Typical pathway

A common path is to finish high school with courses in math, science, geography, drafting, and computer studies. Many students then take a college diploma, university degree, or related postsecondary program in geography, geomatics, GIS, or a similar field; some employers may prefer extra statistics, databases, or programming. During school or after graduation, co-op, internship, or entry-level technical work can help build experience with GIS software, spreadsheets, databases, data entry, mapping, and technical support. Requirements can vary by employer, province, and the type of GIS work.

  • Perform data entry and editing activities and maintenance operations to systems following pre-determined calibration procedures
  • Integrate external software such as spreadsheets and statistical packages with GIS software
