HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
A background in nursing is usually needed, and employers often look for experience before moving into a supervisory role. The path can vary by province, employer, and workplace setting, but it commonly includes working as a nurse and building leadership experience over time. Some employers may value further education or training in health service administration or management. In some places, registration as a registered nurse is required, and in others it may be an asset or a requirement depending on the employer. Bilingual ability can help in some regions, especially where both French and English are used in health care.

A DAY IN THE LIFE
What a day can include
A head nurse or supervisor may start the day by checking staffing, reviewing patient priorities, and helping assign work to the nursing team. During the shift, they may answer questions from staff, solve scheduling or supply problems, and follow up on changes in patient needs. They often meet with other health professionals to coordinate care and keep the unit running well. Part of the day can involve paperwork, quality checks, or staff coaching. If a workplace is busy, they may also step in with direct patient care. The work can change quickly, so staying organized and calm is important.
