HOW TO GET THERE

Typical pathway

A common path is to finish secondary school with strong grades in math, computer, electronics and media-related courses, then move into a college or university broadcasting program, or a related technical program, depending on the school and employer. Some students may also build skills through hands-on labs, co-op, volunteer work, student media, or entry-level work at radio, TV, or online media outlets. Early experience with broadcast equipment, troubleshooting, and live production helps. Requirements can vary by employer, province, and the type of station or production role.

  • Operate and monitor radio and television broadcasting systems to broadcast, receive signals and to regulate clarity and range of sounds and colours of recordings or broadcasts
  • Operate broadcast equipment to produce audio and video streaming broadcasts for the Internet
  • Make emergency repairs to equipment and substitute programs in case of signal failure
  • Maintain, install and troubleshoot a wide variety of broadcast hardware and software
  • Set up and operate consoles to pick up and select feed sources from different locations and to air radio or television programs and commercials
  • May supervise other broadcast technicians.
