HOW TO GET THERE

Typical pathway

A common route is to finish secondary school, especially courses in visual arts, English, and computer or graphic design if they are offered. Many students then build a portfolio and continue with college, university, or other design training in fashion, theatre production, visual arts, or related fields, though the path can vary by employer and specialization. Some people also gain early experience through co-op, internships, volunteer work, community theatre, retail display, or assisting with exhibits and costumes. Employers may look for strong creativity, sketching, communication, and computer skills, along with practical hands-on experience.
