HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
A typical path starts in secondary school with English and physical education, plus regular participation in sports or school athletics to learn the rules and build confidence. Many people first gain experience by refereeing or umpiring local games, school leagues, or community events, then move on to more competitive levels as they improve. Training is often offered by sports organizations, leagues, or provincial bodies, and the exact process can vary by sport, province, or employer. Strong communication, calm judgement, attention to detail, and a good understanding of the rules are important for early success.
