HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
There is no single pathway for this NOC, and requirements can vary by employer and role. Many people start by finishing high school, then look for work in security, retail, or investigative settings. Some employers may want previous experience, while others provide on-the-job training. For certain positions, a security guard licence or other certification may be required, and a driver’s licence, first aid training, or other related training may be helpful depending on the job. Students who are interested in this field can build experience through part-time work, volunteer roles, or courses that strengthen communication, observation, and report writing. Because jobs differ, it is smart to check the posting carefully before applying.

A DAY IN THE LIFE
What a day can include
A typical day can change quickly in this occupation group. A worker may start by checking schedules, reviewing incident notes, and making sure cameras, access points, or other security tools are working. During the shift, they might walk through a building or store, monitor activity, respond to concerns, and speak with employees, customers, or members of the public. In investigative roles, they may spend time gathering facts, interviewing people, reviewing records, and preparing reports. In retail loss prevention, the focus may be on watching for suspicious behaviour and helping reduce theft. Throughout the day, workers need to stay calm, notice small details, and follow workplace procedures carefully.
