Typical pathway
A typical pathway is to finish secondary school and then look for an entry-level job in a cafeteria, fast-food restaurant, takeout counter, or similar food service setting. Employers may provide on-the-job training in order taking, simple food preparation, serving, cash handling, and cleaning. Helpful school subjects include English, Math, and Cooking or food studies where available. Some students gain early experience through part-time, summer, or volunteer work in food service. Requirements can vary by employer and province, but this job usually values customer service, teamwork, and the ability to work quickly and follow directions.

- Clean, peel, slice and trim foodstuffs using manual and electric appliances
- Prepare food such as sandwiches, hamburgers, salads, milkshakes and ice cream dishes
