HOW TO GET THERE

Typical pathway

There is no single pathway for every gas fitter, and training requirements can vary by employer and province. In Canada, many workers in this occupation have an apprenticeship or trades certificate or diploma, while others may complete related college study before entering the trade. High school completion is common for getting started, but some workers have different education backgrounds. Students interested in this career should focus on practical science, math, and shop or technology courses, then look for trade training, apprenticeships, or entry-level work that builds gas-system skills. Because the work involves safety and technical knowledge, learning on the job and keeping skills up to date are important.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

What a day can include

A gas fitter’s day often starts by reviewing job plans, drawings, or service requests and loading the tools and parts needed for the site. On the job, they may measure spaces, mark installation points, run gas lines, install meters or regulators, and connect equipment. Later, they might test systems for leaks, adjust controls, replace worn parts, or service heating units and appliances. Some days include responding to gas escape calls or helping investigate a safety incident. The work can shift quickly between installation, repair, testing, and customer communication. Before finishing, gas fitters usually confirm the system is working safely and write up what was done.
