HOW TO GET THERE
Typical pathway
A common path is to finish high school and look for entry-level work with drilling or service contractors. Useful subjects include sciences, physical education, machine shop, and computer basics. Many new workers start in hands-on labour jobs, then learn on the job by helping move pipe and tools, clean the rig area, and assist with setting up, taking down, and transporting equipment. Employers may prefer candidates who are fit, safety-minded, and able to follow directions. Some workers also gain experience through related construction, industrial, or truck-driving work, depending on the employer, province, and job duties.
