School Subject: Industrial Arts (Woodworking)

  • Carpenter

Carpenters read plans and measurements, then cut, shape, and assemble wood and other building materials. They build and install foundations, frames, floors, walls, roofs, doors, windows, stairs, cabinets, and trim. They also repair damaged structures, do renovation work, and finish surfaces so the final result is strong and safe. On some jobs, carpenters set up scaffolding, use power tools, and work with hand tools, levels, and measuring equipment. They may work on residential, commercial, institutional, or industrial projects, depending on the employer. Good carpentry also means checking accuracy, following building codes and safety rules, and adjusting work when plans change on site.
