Thinking of Studying Abroad? Scholarships Can Help Make It Possible

If you’re a student who likes to travel, or dreams of living in a foreign country, then choosing to study abroad could be an ideal opportunity.  The experience is hard to beat, enabling students to learn while experiencing other cultures.  Studying abroad can be expensive, however – often quite a bit more costly than studying in Canada. Luckily, there are lots of scholarships available to help.

There are a number of different places to look to find scholarships for international study, and chances are there are multiple scholarships to study in just about any country that interests you.  Before you start your search, however, you should do some research on the total costs of studying abroad for the program and school you want.  This way, you will be able to look for the scholarships that will go the farthest toward covering these costs.

Directly Through the University or College

If you already have your heart and mind set on a specific international school, investigate whether that university or college offers scholarships or grants to help Canadian students come there to study.  Depending on the school and their facilities, some scholarships can also include things like living arrangements in a dorm or residence, help covering your travel costs, and other financial assistance beyond simply tuition and textbooks.

If you’re already one or two years into a degree at a Canadian university, check with your current school’s financial aid office to see what scholarships they might be able to provide.  Many universities have academic relationships with international institutions, and can offer unique opportunities.

Scholarships Funded By the Canadian Government

There are also a number of scholarships funded by the Ministry of Education and Government of Canada.  These are available to browse through and apply to online at www.scholarships-bourses.gc.ca. These scholarships range in amount and which countries they will help you study in, but can offer some excellent opportunities.  While some of them are geared toward graduate research, there are still many that are available to help undergraduates enjoy the experience of international study.

    Search Online Scholarship Databases

As with any other kind of scholarship, there are lots to find and apply to online.  Databases and websites do a great job bringing a wide variety of scholarships together into one spot, making it easy to search for and find ones that will help you study in the country you want.

The scholarship database at ScholarshipsCanada.ca is a great place to start, with more than 85,000 scholarships available for a wide range of international schools and programs.

Look Around Your Home Town or City

While online scholarship listings are definitely useful, remember that you can also find scholarships locally through businesses, cultural groups, and religious organizations in your community.  Many of these groups are interested in helping students travel for international study, especially those students who have a specific connection or interest in another country or culture.

  • International Scholarships

    International Scholarships

A large bulk of Canada’s student population—in addition to the actual base population—is made up of immigrants and international students. But going to a university or college in another country always means one major thing: hiked up international tuition fees. While Canada can offer some great education to those who may not have the same opportunities in their own countries, the price isn’t cheap. Luckily there are some significant scholarships up for grabs geared specifically to international students.

    International Undergraduates Scholarships within Canada

    Humber College International Entrance Scholarships

Divided throughout the school’s three semesters per year, international scholarships here are awarded based on serious consideration of academics, reference letters, statement of interest and community involvement. In other words, the best get the money. There are scholarships awarded that amount to between $1,000 and $5,0000, and even full tuition. The latter is only awarded to three students throughout the year, so that’s the one to shoot for. These scholarships are both entry and Bachelor’s Degree Scholarships.

York University International Student Scholarship Program

With scholarships up for grabs for both undergraduates and graduate students, there are entry, continuing student scholarships and bursaries to apply for if you are an international student. York students are encouraged to set up a Student Financial Profile to be aware of the selection and application processes.

University of British Columbia Scholarships for International Students

Vancouver is one of the best cities to live in if you are an international student. UBC offers individual entry scholarships totalling in $40,000 over four years. That’s $10,000 per year, which is some of the best money in Canada hands down.

Carleton University Entrance Scholarships for International Students

As long as you have an admission average of between 80-84.9% or 85-89.9%–depending on what you apply for—you could be eligible for Carleton University scholarships amounting to between $1,000 and $8,000.

    International Graduate Scholarships within Canada

These four schools boast some of the best scholarships within Canada for international students pursuing either a Masters degree or a Doctorate degree. These are awarded based on your previous undergraduate success, work experience, references, and personal essays. These take more time to apply for than the above—apart from the entrance scholarships—but oftentimes the amount you can receive from a single university can be higher within the graduate sphere.

  • Researching Scholarships for Over-Seas Education

    Researching Scholarships for Over-Seas Education

Going to university or college after high school can lead to many good career opportunities, but it can also be expensive. Many scholarships are available for people studying in Canada, but what if you want to go overseas? They might be hard to find, but money is available for Canadian students who want to enroll in programs overseas. This kind of financial help can make it much easier for people to manage the costs of an education.

One of the problems with finding scholarships for post-secondary studies, whether at home or elsewhere is that they come from many different places. Information on many of them could be gathered together into one website or it could be spread out over many different websites, and students might have to search each one to find the information they need.

Often, the first place to look is on university or trade school websites. The University of Windsor, for example, has links to various scholarships in areas such as child and family health or the German language, as well as for students planning to study in places like Japan or Australia. Trade schools and community colleges might also have scholarships or bursaries, although their focus tends to be local rather than international.

Another good source of information is the government. Several websites are available for basic information, such as the Global Affairs Canada website or the Canadian Bureau for International Education. Some of these scholarships might have many applicants, and it can be very important to make sure that you have the proper paperwork and that you fit as many of the requirements as possible.

Some scholarships offer full tuition for students, but others offer only a smaller amount to help the students get started. However, even a small amount of money can help, especially with all of the expenses for food, housing, clothes, and other needs.

Are you thinking of studying overseas? You should probably start to make a list of everything that you are likely to need and try to calculate how much it will cost to live and still pay for tuition and other expenses. If you study in your home town, you can probably save money by living with your parents or other relatives, but that might not be possible overseas.

Once you know approximately how much money you are likely to need, you will have a better idea of whether or not a scholarship will be enough to pay your costs. Some scholarships can be delayed for a year or more. If you need to earn some extra money for your schooling, taking time to work after high school could help.

Studying overseas may be expensive; however, scholarships from the government, universities, and other organizations can help- do your research and don’t give up!

  • Applying to an International Scholarship Opportunity; Am I ready to move?

Applying to an International Scholarship Opportunity; Am I ready to move?

If you are about to apply for an international scholarship, you may want to really think about it before you hit the send button. International scholarships are not for everyone, and especially not for those who get homesick after being away for two days. In order to really commit to your application and to your education, you must imagine what your life might be like over-seas before you make the leap. Of course, nothing really turns out to be what you imagined, but it helps to cultivate questions you may not have had beforehand.

Questions to ask yourself before you start applying to International Scholarships:

    Do I like to fly/travel?

Some people love to travel. They get on a plane and fly wherever they can. You might not like flying or spending long hours in airports. If you go over-seas for school, you will most definitely be spending time on a plane. You will also be on your own trying to navigate your way through a country you have never been in before. Maybe they don’t speak English and you will have to find other ways of communicating. It is up to you on whether you will be able to meet these challenges head on, or avoid them altogether. If these things make you very uncomfortable-being in a strange land where you don’t know anyone- you might want to re-think your choices of where you will go to school.

Do I mind being away from family and friends for long periods of time?

Going over-seas for a scholarship opportunity can be an adventure. However, if you get homesick often when you are away from your family and friends, it might be difficult for you to adapt. Some students are away for six months before they are able to visit their families again. If there are cheaper ways for you to go back home, that would be the ideal. However, you often have to pay your own way to go back home and visit which can end up costing you thousands of dollars. If you are OK with not seeing your loved ones for a year, you will be OK with taking up an over-seas scholarship. There are ways for you to still communicate with your family and friends if you are far away; phone calls, texts, emails, Skype, Facetime, etc.

Is the school/ international scholarship I am applying for up to my standards?

There are tons of different international scholarship opportunities for Canadian students. The question is; which one is for you? You have to weigh all your options. Try literally LAYING THEM OUT on the floor in front of you, including pro and con lists for each school. Really step back and look at them. Conquer and divide. Don’t waste time on applications that don’t have everything you want. You may have to compromise a bit, but don’t have more cons than pros on your chosen lists. Moving away from the life you know and entering into a new one is a big decision and you don’t want to waste precious time.
