  • Creating Value in What You Do

Creating Value in What You Do

When we live our lives so quickly in this fast-paced modern world, sometimes things can begin to blur together and become somewhat meaningless. We move from one place to another, do one errand after another, we talk with this person and that person, we work, we go to school, we volunteer….it goes on and on. Sometimes this can become a headache and we feel like there is so much stuff to do in so little time. We rush from this to that and are always watching the clock. There is something beneficial to be found in slowing down and taking some time to think about what it is we are doing. One day you might sit down and think about how we are not valuing our lives in the way we wish to. This rushing without creating meaning is essentially a waste of life, and reveals a personal need to create value in what is being done.

In order to create value in what you do, you may want to think about what is important to you. For me, I made myself a list of priorities –  things that are important to me. My list includes eating healthy food, exercising regularly, continuous education, having a source or sources of income, sleeping enough to feel good, having some fun and practicing relaxation. I also value challenging myself to change and grow as a person and doing things that scare or thrill me.

In addition to priorities, it is important to also name your feelings as you go about your daily routines. Some activities make us feel good, and some activities make us feel bad. This is important to be aware of.  If something makes you feel bad, try to pinpoint what it is about it that makes you feel bad. For example, you may find yourself in a situation where you do not feel good. Try to name what you are feeling as you experience it in order to avoid repeating this action in the future.

By being cognizant of our feelings and what makes us feel good, we are able to create a life for ourselves where we place value in the things we do. This allows us to truly live our lives to the fullest. Try it today! You won’t regret it.

  • You Are Your Best Cheerleader

    You Are Your Best Cheerleader

Do you ever feel overwhelmed or stressed out by things happening at school or even at home? Everybody has bad days sometimes. Life can throw curve balls at you that you never expect. Maybe you’re not getting along with your friend or maybe you didn’t make the sports team you really wanted to make. These types of problems can make you feel down and upset. This is completely normal; not every day is going to be perfect. We all go through this, so don’t feel like you’re alone.

What is most important about going through tough times is how you deal with them. You can choose to talk to other people about how you’re feeling. Whether it’s a teacher, a parent or a friend, these are all people who care about you and will listen to your problems. They want you to succeed as well. When you can’t turn to them you can always turn to yourself – don’t count yourself out.

You are your best cheerleader at the end of the day. By cheerleader I don’t mean someone  holding pom-poms. By cheerleader I mean that you have the ability to motivate yourself to do difficult things and feel better about yourself. Everybody has their own way of doing this. Maybe your way of being a cheerleader is that you like to reward yourself after accomplishing your goal or you like to mentally encourage yourself.  It’s perfectly okay to give yourself a pat on the back every once in a while. In fact, it’s healthy!

Sometimes fear can be your own worst enemy. You may be scared to try something new or don’t feel like you are capable of succeeding in a new situation. Having the confidence within yourself that you can succeed is the best way to accomplish your goals. Instead of putting yourself down, try encouraging yourself and thinking positively about a situation. Try replacing any negative feelings with positive ones. Don’t be so hard on yourself! Something as little as a change in attitude can do wonders for your self-esteem.

You know that just because you didn’t make the sports team doesn’t mean you’re not good at that sport. Maybe you can practice more and prepare yourself for tryouts next year. You also know that just because things at home haven’t been great lately that it is not your fault; sometimes other factors play a role in hard situations. Having a positive outlook on things and cheering yourself on will improve your confidence. If you start believing that you can do anything you set your mind to, you will see results. So start thinking like your own personal cheerleader!

  • Where Are You? Finding Yourself

    Where Are You? Finding Yourself

Imagine your life as a timeline graph, from birth to present to future.

Write down all of your major goals in your life that you feel you want to achieve. In turn, write down the events in your life that have already happened that you believe have affected you and have made you who you are today. This isn’t an exercise in wallowing but one about clarification and identification of issues that might be hampering your present potential and the blossoming of your true sense of self.

Spend a little time writing with clarity about the past in your timeline. As much as where you’re headed is important, so is making peace with the past. A timeline is an incredibly objective method for marking down past occurrences in your life that you consider to have been major. You can look at them as formation blocks and as changing experiences along your timeline without imbuing them with too much emotion (as you would  within your personal diary) . Keep it simple, real and condensed to the major effect or lesson learned from each past incident.

When analyzing negative past experiences, look to the positive learning message in it and don’t dwell on the mistakes or the negatives. Everyone has these blips in their timeline but pretending they are either worse than they were or non-existent, won’t do you any favors. Instead, recognize that if it had not been for those past experiences you would not be where or who you are today. If there has been an abuse situation, remember, abuse thrives when kept secret; telling someone is the antibiotic.

Finding yourself is an enlightening experience and you become self sufficient . It  is a time of harmony because you develop that philosophy or belief system that will carry you throughout the rest of your life. When you love yourself and who you are, you will savor and enjoy both life’s pain and pleasures.

  • Self-Improvement 101

    Self-Improvement 101

As we face September and the coming of a whole new school year, we are often faced with the same questions: Am I good enough? What can I do to make myself a better person, the person I truly want to be?

I recently read an article that focused on improving one’s relationships by remembering six negative qualities of past relationships. Instead of dwelling on them, take those negative aspects and turn them into positive aspects to seek and ask for. For example, instead of looking at a past bad relationship in terms of, “I never want to go out with someone who cheats”, think, “I am looking for someone who will be true to me”. This type of thinking trains your brain to ask for what you do want as opposed to what you don’t want. It is a great way of turning negative points in your life into positive points and helping you to further your personal growth. So, for this effort in self-improvement, I suggest elaborating on the example of negative relationships. However, this time we will be using it to improve our relationship with ourselves.

Pick six aspects about yourself that you find negative or that you would like to change. Here are my examples, and remember to replace “I don’t want” with “I do want”:
    – “I do want to be fit, athletic and healthy inside and out”
    – “I do want to be practical, smart and well-adapted to my world”
    – “I do want a job that will provide me with a source of steady income”
    – “I do want to live independently”
    – “I do want to have routines that keep me healthy and organized”
    – “I do want to have social relationships that nourish and energize me”

Once you’ve nailed down some good goals or positive statements about what you want in your life, post these somewhere you can see them every day. Choose to look at this list whenever you have a negative or a self-destructive thought. Remind yourself of what you want: “I want to be fit, athletic and healthy inside and out”, and then move to setting and reaching a goal that will get you there. This way of changing negative cognitions into positive self-statements is a great way of improving your self-esteem and self-image. The way that we look at ourselves is in our control, and when you believe you can succeed, you can do anything!

The important aspect to keep in mind is repetition. Be prepared to tell yourself positive statements over and over again. Be prepared for setbacks; You will have moments and days when it seems like you will not be able to convince yourself of your worth. It is those moments when you will have to be strong and hold on, feeding yourself positive thoughts to replace your negative thoughts. Eventually, with repetition, this will become a habit, an ingrained tendency, that will make your life that much easier! Good luck!

  • If You Can Dream it – You Can Do It!

If You Can Dream it – You Can Do It!

Ever wondered what stopped you from getting it when you thought you still had it. The first ‘it’ refers to your goals. The second ‘it’ refers to your inner potential. The inner potential I am talking about refers to an amazing abyss of infinite energy, which when channelized and utilized can lead to a fulfilled life. The secret in getting hold of this infinitesimal energy is the ‘the law of attraction’.

I was watching ‘The Secret’, a film created by Rhonda Byrne.  All of a sudden, I discovered this powerful secret: its ingenious nature caught my attention, ‘the law of attraction’.

Every living and non-living being on this planet knowingly or unknowingly lives by a set of laws defined by the universe, the law of attraction being one of them. Simple as it may sound but is very powerful. Let me make its understanding simpler: ’like attracts like’. All experiences we encounter on a day-to-day basis, be it the good ones or the bad ones, are the result of our own thoughts. Shocking as it may seem, in actuality, this is true.

Positive thoughts result in positive experiences. The opposite also holds good. Negative thoughts result in negative experiences. A question may arise as to how to monitor one’s thoughts. The solution is right here: observe your feelings! The feeling of being low, feelings of depression, anger, hatred, resentment, and jealously are all the result of negative thoughts which result in negative experiences. Similarly feelings of love, passion, generosity, empathy, and courage result in a positive ebb and thus project positive experiences on the stage of life as we live it. Winston Churchill rightly said, ‘we create our own universe as we move along’.

Having discovered this powerful secret, I decided to experience it. I was put in situation where I could not be physically present with my father who suffered from a peculiar kind of skin disease. Symptoms of this disease included peeling of the epidermis which caused itching and bleeding. Doctors diagnosed it as a condition due to continuous exposure to dry environments and minute particles of dust.

Every night before I slept, I would picture my father in a condition of perfect health, happy and joyful: like attracts like. I pictured him telling me about his disease being cured. The events that followed were astonishing to me but methodical according to the universal law of attraction. In about a week’s time, there was an unexpected call from my father. He seemed happy and excited.  He began to tell me about the unexpected cure he saw; the regular itching and bleeding suddenly stopped. All was well.

My happiness knew no bounds. It was the joy of being able to help my near and dear ones in their hour of need. It was the joy of discovering a way to create my own universe. . The universe transcends to create that what you want. That lies in the power of your very thought, the power to attract something good.

Thoughts directly relate to feelings. You could begin to feel good, you could begin to feel rich, you could begin to feel loved, you could begin to feel appreciated – you could begin to feel everything you want. The universe would correspond and draw the parallel to you. Your life would become a phenomenon and people around would watch in amazement as you unfurl it in its perfection.
