    To the Future in 2018!

    Happy New Year!

Have you written a new year goal or resolution list yet? Some say that it isn’t worth writing because you probably won’t follow it. However, even if you write one and follow it a little bit, you have already done well for the year. It can be hard to keep promises to yourself in uncertain times. All you can do is your best; if you don’t think you’ve done your best, you can ALWAYS start again!

At JPD our goal is to bring you the most up to date information about different types of jobs, careers and opportunities out there in the world. To start off the new year, we have many different job profiles for you like: Network technician, radiation therapist, chiropractor, emergency medical technician, teacher’s assistant and more!

Make sure to check out our scholarship section for January deadlines for post-secondary scholarships- good luck and until next month!

  • Holly Jolly Holidays!

    Holly Jolly Holidays!

Santa is almost here! December is always an extremely busy month for everyone. Whether you are shopping for presents, doing your final exams of the year, or getting involved with out-door extra curricular activities, this season can feel overwhelming. Finding ways to relax and relieve the stress of the holidays can be hard. The best thing to do is go with the flow and just let everything happen and fall into the right place. Enjoy time with friends and family. Feel proud of this year’s accomplishments.

For the last month of 2017, JPD has a bunch of great articles on: how to volunteer during the holidays, embracing the holidays, hiking up your science and math grades, when to see a career counsellor, and great Trades career profiles.

Check out the new Career Profiles for the Trades section: brick and stone mason, agricultural fruit grower, hazardous materials worker, and being an entrepreneur.

Have a safe and Happy Holiday!

  • November: A Month to Remember

    November: A Month to Remember

Every year, we celebrate Veterans  in Canada with Remembrance Day on November 11th. This is a very important day in Canada and most schools acknowledge it by attending an assembly. The assembly addresses the hardships and some triumphs made by soldiers and Canadian Forces in the past and present. Students, teachers and parents come together to honour those who gave their time, and sometimes their lives to help us have a better future. How will you honour the veterans of Canada? It is always nice to take some time by yourself and reflect on these things. The world is an even more strange place than it was yesterday, and it is important to respect and acknowledge those who have given certain sacrifices.

November is a strange month because of its slow transition into Winter- one minute you may be enjoying the Fall leaves, the next you are making snow angels! JPD has some great information for you this month including a tone of various career profiles: Botanist, Fruit Grower, Librarian, Arborist, Tile Setter and more! Check out the Student Life section of JPD where you will find a cool article on a new CBC Podcast called “This Is High School”.

    Have a great month!

  • Changing Seasons

    Changing Seasons

When the seasons start to change, we start to change, too. The cooler weather brings us inside more often and we may not be as outgoing or social as we were during the summer or when school started. But Fall can bring a lot of exciting things; Halloween, formals, beautiful colours, and of course, Pumpkin Spice Lattes! On top of those cool things can also come tests and mid-term exams. It is always a good idea to keep an even balance in your life that includes studying and fun social activities.

This month we have a lot of Career Profiles for you: plumber, ironworker, social media coordinator, funeral director, bicycle repair person and more. We have paired a JPD job video link with the Career Profile article, so don’t forget to watch it, too!

Stay safe and see you back here in November!

Leap into the New School Year!

Still dreaming about the beach? It is always hard getting back in the school spirit in September. Everything has changed; the weather, the schedule, the grade, the responsibilities, and maybe even your friends. These changes that happen can be unstoppable, so it is always best to just leap into it with a positive attitude! Testing yourself and your comfort zones can be incredibly rewarding.

To start the new year off, we have some amazing, informative article pieces for you: how to get into a high school co-op program, decorating your dorm, driver test tips, getting back into the school mood, spotting an illegitimate scholarship, how to budget your financial aid, and tons more!

We are currently looking for high school student writers to contribute to JPD- tell us your story! Do you have some advice on co-op programs? Saving money for Post-Secondary? Applying to University? We want to hear your stories and others do, too!

Email me at jpdeditor@magiclanternmedia.com and we will chat about the possibilities.

See you all back here next month!

  • Cheers to Another Successful Year!

    Cheers to Another Successful Year!

    Congratulations!

You are now in your final month of school and you made it with great success! Whether you are heading off to post-secondary school or climbing to another grade, the team at JPD wishes you luck in all your future endeavours- school or otherwise.

You are probably studying for final exams and tests right now, but don’t worry- relaxation and fun are in sight. Summer break is a great time for doing volunteering, starting an apprenticeship or a new job. In between these more calculated activities, make sure you take time out for yourself to relax and relish in your successful year. Even if you think you didn’t have a good year, you can always improve, start again and learn from your mistakes.

In the June issue of JPD, we have lots of great articles that may help you out during the summer months: how to look for summer jobs and different types of summer jobs, looking for off-campus and on-campus housing, prepping for your first year of post-secondary, different volunteer options, and articles on different hobbies and activities like learning calligraphy!

Got some time on your hands this summer? Want to write for JPD starting this September 2017? Send me an email of inquiry this summer at JPDeditor@magiclanternmedia.com and I’ll fill you in on how you can be a part of the team!

  • Motivation in May

    Motivation in May

Do you ever feel more motivated when it turns into Spring? Flowers are growing, the earth is thawing and you find yourself outside more than ever, taking in as much fresh air as you can- it is rejuvenating! Now may be the time when you start researching what you will be doing when you leave school in June; looking at summer job postings, summer school and volunteer positions. If you are in your last year of high school, now may be a good time to finish up all your remaining community service hours.

In JPD this month, we are featuring articles directly from students who have experienced a co-op program while in school. From working in a medical emergency room to working at a summer camp, these students have learned a lot from their co-op programs. Getting involved in a co-op program can help you decide the career path you want to take once you are out of high school and beyond. If you are interested in a co-op program, contact your career counsellor at school and they will point you in the right direction. Or, you can simply research where you would like to go on the internet and reach out to that specific company or organisation- be adventurous!

    Stay safe this month!

  • Spring has Sprung

    Spring has Sprung

The snow is gone and the flowers are budding; it is Spring again. Spring is a time of renewal and there are many ways to take advantage of it; going for walks, riding your bike, reading or playing sports in the park. It is also a great time to start preparing and thinking about applying for spring and summer jobs. In JPD this month, we have a number of articles on how to get your resume ready, how to prepare for interviews, how to create the best cover letter, and what companies or co-op programs might be looking for in an applicant.

Next month, we will be featuring some articles from co-op students around the country. They will be sharing their personal experiences from their chosen programs and hopefully, helping others make decisions on what to look for in a co-op program. Co-op programs are great opportunities to learn different trades and skills hands-on. If you are interested in sharing your story and experience, send us an email at JPDeditor@magiclanternmedia.com .

    Stay tuned!
