  • A Closer Look at a Career as a Landscape Architect

A Closer Look at a Career as a Landscape Architect

Have you ever gone to the park in your community and wondered how the park came to be? We might not realize it, but we often find ourselves immersed in the output of the hard work of a landscape architect—whether it’s the green space at your favourite mall, the al fresco cafeteria at your mom’s or dad’s office building, or the open study space at your sibling’s university.

There is a misconception, however, that landscape architects are the same as landscape designers, but architects are involved in the planning stages before a project even gets off the ground, while landscape designers are brought in during the design stages. This means landscape architects deal with a wide variety of elements and collaborate with various teams to bring an outdoor space into life. Let us take an in-depth look at a career as a landscape architect and how you can get your foot in the door in this promising industry.

So What Is a Landscape Architect?

A landscape architect bears the responsibilities similar to a building or house architect except that they solely work with outdoor spaces, which are either residential, commercial, or government. For example, when a property owner buys office space and decides to convert it to a strip mall, they will hire a landscape architect to conceptualize an outdoor space aligned with that strip mall’s brand and ensure the project is completed according to timelines, budget, city regulations, and environmental considerations (soil, irrigation, drainage, etc). At the same time, they have to collaborate with city planners, engineers, property owners, and government departments.

    Salary

According to PayScale.com, a landscape architect can earn as much as $41,396 up to $80,497 a year. Those with experience of seven years and up can earn as much as $100,000 to $140,000 a year. In some cases, they are also entitled to profit sharing and other bonuses.

    Skills

It takes more than knowledge of design aesthetics to be a successful landscape architect. You will need great heaps of collaborative skills since you will be working alongside different teams to achieve the same goal – an incredible outdoor space that the public or the community can enjoy.

Being a team player is a skill that we learn to acquire or develop at an early age, so welcome with open arms if your teacher asks you to work with groups on school projects. As you grow older, you can enhance your collaborative spirit, which is a must if you want to succeed in the landscape architecture field.

Apart from this, one also has to be knowledgeable in the scientific elements involved in creating outdoor spaces. A good dose of project management expertise will also be beneficial in the field as landscape architects are also responsible for monitoring the progress of an outdoor space project.

Education-wise, a degree in landscape architecture is a must, and there are two prestigious institutions that offer this in Canada – a BA at the Uni versity of Guelph and a BAP at the Universite de Montreal. For advancement in the industry, future landscape architects can also complete a master’s program.

    Pros and Cons

The most obvious advantage of being a landscape architect is that they have the wonderful opportunity to be mainly responsible for bringing green or environment-friendly outdoor space ideas into fruition, putting their creative spin and innovative thinking, while keeping true to their green initiatives.

A disadvantage is that it is not an isolated profession which means they have to deal with different types of people.  They have to be open to the possibility that they will encounter people whom they would not see eye to eye with in terms of initiating the project, and in turn, they have to work doubly hard and make an effort to put differences aside while remaining focused on the same goal.

    The Future

There is a shortage of landscape architects in Canada, but this is something that can easily be mitigated.

  • A Closer Look at a Career as a Floral Designer

A Closer Look at a Career as a Floral Designer

If you get to attend events with your parents or your older siblings like birthdays or wedding anniversary parties, you might notice that staging a successful one involves a variety of elements. Not many of you may notice, but a principal part of these events are floral arrangements, especially when it’s a debutante’s party, an engagement party, or a wedding.

To create intricate floral arrangements that compliment the occasion or in line with the theme takes a great amount of art and expertise. If you are thinking of a career as a floral designer, read on for essential information that can help you get on the on the track.

Floral Designers – What You Need to Know

Floral designers or florists as most people refer to them are responsible for doing flower arrangements, performing tasks that include cutting live, dried, and silk flowers and greenery. Most people think that floral designers only work in flower shops and are therefore occupied only when there are national holidays or special occasions. However, floral designers are mostly busy throughout the year as they also work hand in hand with event managers or event management companies for a wide variety of large-scale functions.

For these events, they conceptualize the floral designs according to the client’s needs, timelines, and budgets. They must ensure that their floral displays meet the style or sentiment of their clients. In most cases of weddings and engagement parties, the clients themselves already have the types of floral displays in mind so there is no need for floral designers to envision a design, unless requested.

However, bringing to life what the clients have visualized is for sure a challenging task. It is therefore a must for the floral designers to ensure it’s realized. To do this, they will often have to scout for the flowers themselves and it can prove to be difficult if the flowers requested are native to a particular area or region. For example, suppose a bride requests a Toronto-based floral designer Red Columbine to be part of an intricate centrepiece for their reception venue. It is now up to the floral designers to contact growers or suppliers where this flower is available (British Columbia) and make the shipping arrangements. They also have to purchase the necessary embellishments.

    Salary

According to PayScale.com, florists can earn as much as $24,106 -$40,435 a year. In some cases, they are also entitled to bonuses.

    Skills

To be a floral designer, you have to have a high school diploma or equivalent and learn the specifics through private floral schools, vocational schools, and community colleges. You can also expand your skills and knowledge in different aspects of the business.

Completing a degree in Fine Arts can enhance your sense of aesthetics and design, while a degree in Botany can arm you with knowledge related to ensuring the proper growth of flowers and plants. If you are looking into owning your own floral shops or being a self-employed florist, you can complete a degree in business which can help provide you with marketing and management skills.

    Pros and Cons

The biggest advantage of being a floral designer is being one of the main contributors to staging successful events or functions. You get to meet with different types of clients and you can always look forward to something different everyday. Even when you are working solely at a floral shop, every customer has their own needs and requests, so there is a promise of excitement at every new task.

For some, it can be incredibly tedious to meet with various types of clients all the time. As they have varying needs, when it comes to challenges and demands, they have varying degrees as well. It will be up to you then to ensure you remain committed to meeting their requests and ensuring that your floral designs meet their expectations.

  • A Closer Look at a Career as a Museum Curator

A Closer Look at a Career as a Museum Curator

“Curate” is a term that has become a part of everyday vocabulary. You must have heard your friends say they want to curate their playlist or you’ve probably caught your aunt or uncle say they want to curate their menu for their upcoming dinner party. Basically, anything which involves organizing or planning is now being referred to as curate.

Those who frequent art institutions know that curate refers to establishing a collection for art exhibits, and although planning and organization are major parts of their job, curators certainly need more than those skills if they want to be triumphant in their profession. Let us take a comprehensive look at this popular career.

Curators – What You Need to Know

Curators have the main responsibility of deciding which artists’ pieces or collection are to be showcased in art galleries, museums, and educational institutions. Curators are also found in science centres, aquaria, archives, facilities dedicated to Hall-of-Fame athletes, zoos, and historic sites.

To fulfill this responsibility, they need to be well-versed in the arts to know which works capture the attention of art connoisseurs. They need to keep themselves up to date on the trends and the prominent artists in the making. They should also be meticulous enough to conduct their own research by travelling the world and getting themselves acquainted with artists from other cultures. In some cases, they not only coordinate with the artists themselves but also with private collectors or donors whom they have to negotiate with in order to showcase their collection.

Once they have designated which artworks are to be put on display, they take charge for their transport, storage, maintenance, upkeep, and cataloguing. When exhibits are launched, they have the main role of ensuring everything goes as planned by having the first say on staging, publicity, and execution.

    Salary

According to PayScale.com, a curator can earn as much as $34,963 up to $76,596 a year. In some cases, they are also entitled to profit sharing and other bonuses.

    Skills

If you are looking at a career as a curator, you would have to complete a bachelor’s degree in the field of art, science, or history. You can also consider museology programs offered in selected universities. It is a big advantage if you are artist or an art lover yourself, although having extensive and historical knowledge about artists, subjects, or eras are typically sufficient. It is a must though that you are aware of general practices in museums and art galleries.

Professional affiliations and connections are helpful for those who want to stabilize their status in the field. For example, the Canadian Museums Association (CMA) is a national organization dedicated to the continuous growth of the Canadian museum sector and provides training and support for any professional in the industry via development programs, conferences, publications, and networking opportunities.

    Pros and Cons

Having the authority on which pieces to put on display is certainly an advantage as curators get to see the pieces before anyone else. They also get to work with emerging artists, and in this aspect, they somehow get to play a part in their future success.

A disadvantage is that it can involve working long hours and being available for all types of events. It can also be extremely demanding especially when traveling is required. On the other hand, this can be an advantage for those who don’t really see themselves as professionals sitting at the office all day. If you want to be a curator, you can expect a profession filled with excitement, that’s for sure.

  • Grinding and Polishing Worker

    Grinding and Polishing Worker

Sometimes, the smallest jobs can make a huge difference. Grinding and polishing workers are only a part of what goes into making objects from clay, plastic, metal, wood, or stone. Still, what they do is very important.

When you move your hand over a rough piece of wood, you can easily get a splinter under your skin. Unpolished stone can cut your hand, but a grinding and polishing worker can help. People in this trade work with hand tools like files or small power tools to polish off the edges that might cause problems to the people who use the containers or other objects.

Being a grinding and polishing worker involves more than just rubbing a file or sandpaper against an object. People in this trade might have to read blueprints and mark defects like cracks that need to be repaired. They might work on small surfaces like bowls or large ones like floors. They have to choose the right kind of tool for each job and be able to work with a variety of materials to make them look as good as possible.

Working in this type of job normally involves learning on the job rather than taking courses. Still, taking a course at a trade school in how to use various tools can be useful, and looking for an apprenticeship is also a good idea.

Salaries for grinding and polishing workers start at about $26,000 per year and can rise to about $52,000. The average salary is over $37,000, and the hourly wage is normally $19 once people have some experience.

Some people might be able to stay in this job for many years, but others might find that they need to move on to other work after a few years. Because the job involves working with their hands, many workers might find that it becomes too difficult for them as they get older. Accidents, arthritis, and all kinds of problems might also mean that people in this type of work are unable to continue.

Job prospects for grinding and polishing workers are not as good as they once were. In 2014, the number of jobs declined, and no one is guaranteed a spot. Having a second job option is a good idea for grinding and polishing workers, but they should not feel that their skills are useless. This type of work is very important for making products as beautiful and usable as possible. Whether in construction or in making gravestones or plaques for buildings, people in this field can find many places to use their skills.

In addition, grinding and polishing workers develop many useful skills that they can use in other jobs. The ability to use hand tools is important for many trades, and being able to finish off a job can help others who might not have those skills. If you like to make objects look good by smoothing off the rough edges and making them shine, the job of grinder and polisher might be right for you.
